A CLOCK which was installed to mark the new millennium ten years ago is to be removed.
The Millennium Clock outside the Victoria shopping centre, in Southend High Street, has not worked for years.
Senior councillors have now agreed to pay £5,000 for its removal and for it to be placed in storage.
It is hoped a replacement clock will feature in the plans to redevelop the town centre.
Southend Council’s executive councillor for tourism John Lamb said: “The Millennium Clock has been suffering the effects of prolonged exposure to the elements.
“The £5,000 allocated in the budget covers the cost of removing the clock.
“A replacement clock will be considered as part of the future town centre regeneration schemes.”
He added they had hoped to move it rather than put it in storage, but could not find a suitable location.
