Basildon reaches for the stars with new sign like Tinseltown

The sign unveiled on the A127

The sign unveiled on the A127

First published in News

Basildon is hoping to inject a touch of Hollywood magic after unveiling its new sign in the style of Tinseltown.

The new "BASILDON" sign has been unveiled at the side of the A127.

Each letter is five feet tall while the US counterpart boasts letters of about 45 feet in height.

The lights which will illuminate the sign at night are yet to be fitted.

The sign is part of a £400,000 project commissioned by Basildon Council to boost the local economy.

A council spokesman said the project is almost finished and the money came from the Thames Gateway programme.

He said the cash will also be used to create new road signs, roadside lighting and entrance signs to the district.

So tell me, how exactly will this sign boost the local economy?

If this really does work, let's hope SBC ask for grants for similar signs saying "Southend", "Leigh", "Westcliff" etc?

I look forward to reading stories of the massive influx of jobs & investment coming to Basildon over the next few months.....

Two-thirds of the 60,000 people working in Basildon are based along the three mile stretch of the A127 which this new sign is highlighting. Creating a stronger identity and investing in order to encourage corperations to come to Basildon and provide jobs - 400k is nothing. I like it and glad to see the council being smart about growth in the district. To put in to perspective what we are getting for our money, it costs 400k to erect a single gantry on a live motorway.

Great!

The 3 roads i use 7 days a week 4 times a day!

A13, A130, A127.

traffic lights DO NOT work and will stand no chance with the delay in change times at sadlers farm due to the quantity of traffic - experience living 100m away for over 30 years!

a 15 minute journey already takes 40 minutes in the morning not any longer and journey times will be longer in 2012.

as demonstrated clearly by those annoying traffic lights when you can see there is no traffic coming yet they dont change for another 15 seconds = 25 cars possibility

and those roads like the progress road lights which cause a 25 minute tail back every morning - the only congestion on the journey to southend! - if change times were properly examined traffic would be better but still bad!

a light controlled junction will simply not work!

if someone could also clarify whether the new 30 mph speed limit introduced today from sadlers to tarpots extends any farther along the london road as after tarpots, it is just not necessary!

I think this is a good idea. At least Basildon is doing something to support its businesses and trying to improve the appearance of the area etc. The sign is not £400K, it is part of a £400K project - I think the sign was more like £90K with the rest of the money paying for new highway signs and industrial estate signs. If anyone actually read the story they would realise that the money comes from the government's Thames Gateway programme, and would be designated for this project - it cannot just be used for what the council wants, ie potholes (which are the county council anyway!). If this project had not been taken forward in Basildon, some other area would have got the money.

As I said above, the government money cant just be used for improving roads - the money would not have been awarded for that, and the potholes is a massive national issue with not enough money to go round the whole country.

Government funding means submitting a detailed project bid, and having that accepted, and then obviously the money has to be spent on that project, its not just put into a pot for the council to do what they want with it!

And car parking in the town is free in the council car parks at weekends and bank holidays etc.

Now it's in the Sun 'Basilwood' is now a national joke. I reckon by the weekend the joke will go international. Whats even funnier is that OK central Gov ponied up the dough. But we taxpayers ultimately have to pay for it. And how! Since the Gov borrowed the money in the first place. We will be paying for this Labour idiocy for a generation or two.
Still at least some signmakers are celebrating. I think this is symptomatic of a Government that has no real ideas at all in how to get us out of the mess they helped create virtually single handed.

The money could have been better spent in too many ways to mention. What about filling in the potholes first before wasting money on a cheap looking sign.

The money could not have been spent on anything else! It was for this project specifically. Potholes are not Basildon Council's responsibility, that is the county, so they could not start filling them in even if they wanted to or had the money!!

Thank God I don't use the A127!!!!! IF the money couldn't be spent on anything else (pot holes etc) WHY not make a better project to advertise Basildon? like the millenium clock in southend highstreet (yeah i know it doenst work all the time and has stopped rotating!!) BUT at least it has a USE!!! it tells you the time!!!! and looks ok!! lol whats this sign do? tell u where Basildon is? there are better ways to do that! The sign just makes Basildon look trashy. sorry but it's true. If i saw that sign and wasnt from around here, I wouldnt want to go there!!! I do think there are better ways the money could be spent in the concept of advertising Basildon...

So £90k for a sign that will look dreadful within a month no doubt. Meanwhile in Wickford (part of Basildon Councils area) a local group has to fund raise to try and get the local war memorial and park restored to some kind of decent order!!

I know which I would prefer to see done....

If this really cost £90,000 that's
£11, 000 a letter. That can't be right surely? Is it made of gold? Please would the Echo ask why it cost so much. It is the equivalent of more than 80 households entire yearly council tax.

Unfortunately Wickford does not come under the Thames Gateway programme and is therefore not eligible for funding under the programme that this funding came from!!

The money is not a donation from the government to do what you want with, it was for a signage project along the A127!

The memorial is obviously a worthy project, but not something you would normally get a government grant for.

The Basildon sign looks really good and i like it. Credit must be given to the Council for securing funding from government pots, rather the money be spent in Basildon rather than somewhere else in the country!!!
