SOUTHEND’S film festival kicks off on Thursday with the arrival of top actor Ray Winstone.

Mr Winstone will be at the opening gala premiere of his new film, Fathers of Girls, also starring his real life daughter, Lois.

The premiere takes place at the Odeon Cinema, in Southend High Street, at 7.30pm with tickets costing £10.

The festival runs until Monday, with fringe events continuing until next Wednesday, May 5, at different venues across the town.

It features more than 30 films ranging from new releases, to world cinema and well-loved classics.

Organised by the White Bus on behalf of Southend Council, most of the films cost just £2, or are free.

Southend Council’s group manager for tourism and promotion, Scott Dolling said: “We are delighted to introduce our second film festival which builds on the huge success of our first one last year.

“There are films to suit all ages and tastes.”

On Saturday (May 1), three of the cinema world’s most famous vehicles can be seen in Southend town centre, along with other star surprises.

The Dukes of Hazard General Lee and the Starsky & Hutch Ford Gran Torino will be displayed at Victoria Circus while Herbie will be outside British Home Stores.
