A TROUBLED nightclub has had its licence called in for review by Brentwood Council.

The Sugar Hut, which was gutted by fire last September, is currently undergoing major refurbishment and could reopen in less than six months.

However, the High Street venue’s licence is now under review after Brentwood Council’s licensing committee exercised new powers to call it in for scrutiny.

The move comes after fears about overcapacity, drug taking and underage drinking at the venue before it closed down.

The council could now impose strict licensing conditions on the premises controlling opening hours and alcohol consumption.

If Sugar Hut bosses fail to comply with new rules it could be shut down. Head of licensing, Cllr Joan Holmes said: “As the Sugar Hut could be opening in the next couple of months I asked officers to gather a report giving details of any evidence they may have accumulated with regards to over crowding, under-age drinking, drug taking and any other incidents.

“The report gave me the evidence I needed. I have therefore called in the licence for review.

“I am not out to crucify the business, but am insistent that when it does open again there are strict controls in place, not only to ensure the safety of its patrons, but also that residents can carry on enjoying the peace they have come to expect over the past few months.”

However, doubts remain over the financial stability of the Sugar Hut.

Last month, the Weekly News reported the Sky Bar in Basildon, which is owned by the Sugar Hut’s parent company, ceased trading.

This followed a report in December saying Sugar Hut’s bosses had set up a special agreement with creditors to stave off administration.
