POLICE have issued a warning about a bogus letter which claims to name a sex offender.
The letters claim to be from Essex Police and have been sent to addresses in Leigh and Rayleigh.
Chief Inspector Glen Westley, District Commander for Rochford, said the letters were entirely untrue and malicious.
He said: “We are aware that a number of malicious letters have been sent out claiming to be from Essex Police. The letters name a man and state that he is a sex offender.
“I appeal to anyone who has received one of these letters to disregard the claims made. The claims are untrue and entirely malicious.
“I would ask anybody who receives a letters to contact us so that we can come and collect the letters and use them as evidence.”
Police are aware that, so far, three letters have been received this morning, Tuesday, September 21, by organisations and businesses. One in Leigh and two in Rayleigh.
If you have received one of the letters please contact your local police station on 0300 333 4444.
