THE world’s last sea-going paddle steamer, the Waverley, is a familiar sight to many and she is back in Southend.

A piece of history, the lovingly restored boat will be ferrying eager passengers along the coast and under Tower Bridge from tomorrow until October 9.

“People enjoy going up and down the river,” says Lynn Jones, Southend Council’s resort services manager.

“The different trips they do are a novel way of visiting places like Whitstable or going up-river to Tower Bridge. I think because we’re a seaside town people enjoy boat trips.

“Obviously, the Waverley is unique because she is the world’s last sea-going paddle steamer. People just love to see the mechanics.

Lynn says: “You can go into the engine room and see the paddles going round and round. She’s been beautifully restored and it’ll be a good opportunity for people to see the fine craftsmanship.”

Southend Council’s deputy leader, John Lamb says: “This ship is unique and wherever it goes it creates a great deal of interest. We advise people to book their sailing places as soon as possible.”
