Thanks to Jim Worsdale for his excellent article on the tragically burned piers at Hastings and Southend (Oct 8).

As a man who truly cares for our town, its history and future, Jim is right to keep the state of our great landmark in the public eye after 34 years of neglect.

He mentions the unlamented Renaissance Southend whose plan for our seafront, unbelievably, did not include the pier!

This sort of feeble approach has limited pierhead attractions to the historic cafe and the RNLI shop.

But don’t we have a huge opportunity that poor old Hastings does not?

The Olympic Games in 2012 should allow Southend to welcome tourists from all around the world, staying in our delightful seaside town and cruising up river to the Games.

Will the Olympics mean the regeneration of our famous pier or the missed opportunity of the century?
