I could not agree more with Lib Dem leader Graham Longley on the need to restore Southend Council to the old committee system of governing the town.

If all decisions are made by the nine cabinet members what is the point of having the other 42 councillors and all the costs they incur?

The committee system worked well for a good number of years with all councillors being part of the democratic decision making process.

The council’s Conservative leader Nigel Holdcroft is misguided to thinks the cabinet system is working well. The cabinet system empowers a small, elitist number of councillors to make decisions for the whole town without any consultation with other councillors.

To say there has been fantastic progress in the town under the cabinet system is drivel.

The seafront, Victoria Avenue, Cuckoo Corner, Progress Road, the non action on the cliffs slippage, the parking bays on Western Esplanade – need I go on?
