Mum is horrified by ‘disgusting’ videos found on new phone

Appalled – Martine Greenwood, 43, of Canvey, found lewd videos on a mobile phone she had just bought for her son Aaron Appalled – Martine Greenwood, 43, of Canvey, found lewd videos on a mobile phone she had just bought for her son Aaron

A MUM was horrified after finding two obscene video messages on a new mobile phone she bought for her 12-year-old son.

Martine Greenwood, 43, of Canvey, visited the Tesco Extra supermarket, in Maldon, to buy two new mobile phones – one for herself and one for her son, Aaron.

Mrs Greenwood spent £60 on two 02 touch screen pay-as-you-go phones, which were tested in the shop by a salesman.

However, when she got home the mother found lewd material on one of the mobiles.

She said: “I turned on the phone, and started to play around with it, when suddenly I saw two pornographic video clips.

“One had a woman running around with no top on, and the other was of a cuddly children’s toy hamster, swearing and using profane language.

“I just couldn’t believe it. What if my son had got to the phone first?

“I’m worried someone else will buy the same make and model and they will find the disgusting content.

“They need to sort this out and carry out better checks before selling equipment like this. Customers shouldn’t have to find this sort of thing on their phones.”

Mrs Greenwood has since visited the store to get a replacement phone.

A Tesco spokesman said: “We apologise to the customer for any distress caused by this incident.

“We will be investigating this matter thoroughly and will be in touch with the customer.”

This is happening far too often. Shouldn't these items be checked before they are despatched for sale? I am broad-minded, but would not expect this to happen on something that could potentially be used by a child.

The lady said:

"I just couldn’t believe it. What if my son had got to the phone first?"

Well maybe he did and actually put them on there!

Not sure I would call a woman running around with no top on, and a toy hamster uttering profanities 'obscene, disgusting and pornographic' I mean does this lad go to school, or frequent newsagents?

Anyway, I often get one called 'Saucy Mobile' no idea what it is, I just delete it unopened not cos I'm a prude, I just don't want some scamsters hacking into my number and forwarding it to others.

"What if my son had got to the phone first"? Well at 12 years old i'm sure he would have had a right laugh showing his mates, unless he's the most naive 12 year old in the world! Please, a 12 year old nowadays knows whats what and isnt going to be shocked or offended by things like this!

Why does a 12yr old need a phone anyway ?

Such an old person thing to say; what's wrong with them contacting their mates on a mobile?
To be honest I'm sure he's seen worse on his laptop/computer!m

Would be interesting to find out if the box was sealed before she opened it. I for one would never buy any electricals that were not factory-fresh sealed.
...
It is VERY unlikely that the this would have happened in the factory as most mobiles need activation, or a SIM in to fully work.

Why do so many people made nasty, personal attacks on this lady? She's probably just naive in going to the press about this. Similar 'phone problem happened to me couple of years ago and again last year. Recycled 'phones are being sold as new all the time. And as for 12 year olds needing 'phones, it's to keep their parents informed as to where they are, if they've missed the bus, need to be picked up, etc. It's scary having a 12 year old out there making their own way home from school, etc. Reassuring to be able to keep in contact with them. And before the youth bashers start, the huge majority of 12 years olds are perfectly well behaved, respectful individuals getting on with their lives even if they do dare to wear a hood on their days off.

StuckInTraffic says...

I agree with imco's comment. I don't understand why people on this site are making nasty comments about this lady. It isn't necessary and it certainly isn't relevant to this story. Whether or not we believe these video clips were truly offensive is also fairly irrelevant, they shouldn't have been their on what is supposed to be a new phone. The lady is totally correct to make a fuss. I would be very very angry if I bought a new item and found it had been previously used.
As to why does a 12 year old need a phone, this is fairly easy, it is for the reasons imco stated. If they need to contact their parents for any reason while they are out. When I was a child we didn't have or need a mobile phone, but I did always have money to use a phone box (anyone remember them). With the shortage of phone boxes now you need a mobile phone. Of course once a child has a mobile phone they will use it for texting their mates constantly but thats not really a problem is it.

Whats this have we got a Mary Whitehouse off the 21st century? you live in Canvey love where everyday no matter where you are you hear this sort off abusive language and not only from a hampster you spoiled sport you should have let your son have a look at this he probably would off had a right laugh at it he probably would off said oh shut up mum get a life or better still get a sense oh humour......

John the resonator says...

I was among the first to have a laugh about a couple of dodgy messages on this 'phone.

But why this has degenerated into personal attacks on this lady and her looks I don't know and I reckon they are most distasteful, especially coming from people who are capable of making intelligent and enjoyable comments.

I'm with imco and StuckInTraffic on that issue, bet some of you aren't much to look at, I admit I'm not.

On the original issue, hope this mum never checks under her son's bed!

Can she be 100% sure her 12 year old son didn't get to the phone before her and add the "offending" content himself?

I've got the "hamster" clip on mine and it's frickin' hilarious, as for a woman running round with no top on..... Per-lease!!!! Most 12 years olds have probably seen a whole lot worse than that.

I agree the the personal attacks on this woman have gone too far but I can't help thinking that her reasons for going to the press were for financial gain ;-)

What financial gain? The phone company will just say her son put the clips on the phone and I doubt anyone will pay for the story.

Would you necessarily know? Once factory settings are reset on certain phones aren’t they as they were out of the box??

If this is a harry the hamster clip then it should never be deleted. It should be sent to the vaults of the bbc and kept for future generations to enjoy. About 7 years ago this was the first clip i recieved bluetoothed to me by a friend, the second was a rather disturbing POV of a sexual act between ET and a rather rancid looking blond woman.
What my question is about the whole story is why was the woman buying 2 phones from a tesco store in maldon? Surley there is a near store than that?

The stupidest non-story I've read in the Echo since the woman who got chucked out of a bingo hall for smoking an electronic cigarette....or even worse, the Big Brother rejects visiting Peter Pans in Southend.
I'm not going to aim any attacks on the woman. I'm sure she's just concerned for her son's welfare, but really, the Echo should know better than to go with this "Mountain out of a Molehill" reporting style. - People have issues with purchased items every day, but you don't fill a newspaper article with them. The only point to the article is the slightly questionable use of the word "Pornographic". - Sorry, but a swearing hamster is not pornographic, and last time I checked, newspapers like the Sun or the Star were not exactly restricted to over 18s, despite having topless women in them.
Yes, I do believe the lady is being prudish, but was there any need for this to be sensationalised? Is Antonia Jones aiming for a promotion as a gossip columnist for The Sport?
Has no-one considered the possibility that this was an ex-display, and that someone might have just downloaded a youtube video for a laugh? And would this woman's 12 year old really be traumatized if he did see the videos, or would he think it was all quite funny?
Honestly, Echo, I have no idea what you were trying to achieve with this, but your paper looks a bit more squalid as a result.

What a terrible thing to suggest. Those fine folk at Tesco's would not dream of ever misleading their customers LOL! As the saying goes "every little helps" their profits that is. Shysters, I would not give them a brass penny.
