The changes to rubbish collection by Basildon Council do not make sense.
The plan, from August 1, to collect pink sacks weekly and stop issuing black sacks has many flaws.
The council will legally lose the ownership of rubbish that is left in any non-council bags, including supermarket bags.
Many will not be tied up and many will just blow away, causing more problems.
Supermarkets are trying to persuade people to bring their own bags. The council proposals will reverse this trend as people will collect them for rubbish use at home.
If there is little requirement now for black sacks, what about dog and cat litter, light bulbs, small batteries, disposable nappies, cloths, old shopping bags, sponge dish cleaners, small pieces of wood, unrecyclable plastic, cooking fat, toothpaste tubes, scrap painted wallpaper, toiletries and vacuum cleaner contents, to name but a few?
Residents pay more than enough in taxes already to be allowed to collect free black sacks, as they now collect free extra pink sacks.
We already have dirty green bins from food waste.
Cleaning a green bin is no easy task. Then there is the irresponsible dumping of rubbish all over the place.
The council should sort out its current problems without seeking new ones.
