CONCERNS are growing about speeding drivers on a Canvey road after several accidents.

Essex county councillor Ray Howard wants Canvey Road, Canvey, to have a speed limit of 30mph, after being contacted by Michael Norris, who lives in the road.

Mr Norris says two cars rolled into a ditch down the road a couple of weeks ago, and a car also smashed through the fence into his property in a separate incident.

Mr Norris, 61, said: “I think it should be 30mph down there. At night we get racers come past. I have spoken to Ray and spoken to the council.

“We had a bad accident in the last week and two bad accidents in the last two months.”

Mr Howard arranged a meeting with Andy Hilsdon, from Essex County Council’s highways dep-artment, to discuss what could be done to make the road safer.

Mr Howard said: “There are four different holes where cars have mounted the footpath and gone into the ditch.

“They all happened over a very short period, including three in one week.

“I am worried about the pedestrians walking on that footpath. I am totally convinced it is speed related. People must slow down.

“There are railings there, but they have been knocked down.”

Speed monitoring equipment has been set up to analyse how fast cars are going along the stretch of road.

An county council spokesman said: “There have been three accidents in recent months on Canvey Road, which have resulted in some fencing and kerbside damage.

“We are currently waiting on materials so we can carry out the repairs. This will be done as soon as we receive them.

“In the meantime we have installed temporary barriers to ensure pedestrians’ safety. We are aware a speed survey is being carried out and will review the results when they are available.”
