Mother’s anger at being told her son Tayler is ‘almost obese’

Warning – Leanne Kane and Taylor with the letter from the NHS Trust Warning – Leanne Kane and Taylor with the letter from the NHS Trust

A MUM has hit out at school weight monitoring after she was told her “perfectly healthy” son was bordering on obese.

Despite only weighing 3 stone 5lbs, Tayler Gunn’s parents were sent a letter warning them he was close to being regarded as clinically obese.

Tayler, five, a 3ft 6ins pupil at Millhouse Infant School in Laindon was measured and weighed as part of the Government’s National Child Measurement Programme, which aims to gauge youngsters’ size to plan for future healthcare.

Tayler’s mum Leanne Kane, 24, received a letter from NHS South West Essex, saying her sport-loving son had too greater body mass index.

It classed him as ‘overweight’ and just two points shy of the obese mark.

The letter added she would be getting a phone call from health experts to give her helpful ‘tips’ on how to maintain a healthy lifestyle for Tayler.

Leanne, of Devonshire Gardens, Laindon, fumed: “You only have to look at Tayler to see he is a normal boy. He is no fatter or taller than anyone else in his class.

“Not only have they told me my perfectly healthy son is overweight and almost obese, they just assume I feed him rubbish and need to get lessons in cooking.

“Tayler is a fit and healthy little boy, he loves fruit and veg and all of our family eat well. He does weekly dance and football sessions.

“I don’t need tips on how to keep him active and healthy!”

The scheme has already come under fire after the Echo revealed how the parents of 24 youngsters across Basildon and Thurrock were sent “patronising” letters saying their children were too fat, when in fact they were a normal weight for their age.

Kids at Laindon Park and Janet Duke Primary schools in Laindon, were wrongly measured and therefore their body mass index was incorrectly calculated.

Leanne added: “Tayler’s school was not among those where kids were measured wrong, but in my view this whole scheme is a waste of time and money.

“When you think of obese you think of someone who can’t walk they are so big or who have health problems.

“Tayler doesn’t have any health problems and has hardly ever even been to the doctor.”

A spokesman for the trust said it was a Government scheme and wouldn’t comment on individual cases.

Contact a solicitor, in mind to issuing the school official in question with a writ.
Offer them the chance of making a public apology, prior to court action, for libellous and deformatory remarks.
Turn this around into their court, and wait for the financial compensation, to be offered.
The school in question, has acted in a disgusting manner to suggest your little boy is bordering on obesity.

"Kids at Laindon Park and Janet Duke Primary schools in Laindon, were wrongly measured and therefore their body mass index was incorrectly calculated". Think the kid needs to change places with those doing the measuring as they need brushing up on their mathematics me thinks.

I dont know about this particular school but there are some where they should start having obesity checks on the teachers and classroom assistants or is it another case of "dont do as I do".

Surely an apology would be enough. This does not require financial recompense.

Obese? This boy is anything but obese! My friend son, who is of normal weight, was told he was under weight...!! This system is ridiculous!

as for al conistons comment 'maybe she could use any lucky cash windfall to buy some proper clothing for this time of year, instead of parading in a vest - have some dignity woman !!',
I wear vest tops..not because I can't afford proper clothing...but because A this weather has been fairly warm, B I sweat too much and no deodorant I have found and stop it and C I like wearing them! Wearing a vest top is not undignified!

It's really a bit of a non story.

Most people would have looked at the letter, laughed, then thrown it away.

Not contact the Echo to get their picture in the paper, and pretend to be so very, very upset.

Wait until he's actually classed as 'obese' before having a whinge. So he's 'almost obese', woopee do, I'm almost obese too, if I put on a few stone.

My main concern is the cameras that the Echo use for these articles, which appear to have automatic ageing settings switched on. 24?! 44 more like!

This is another over the top reaction by a local resident, just to get their name and photo in the paper. By her own admission, the letter doesn't say that he IS obese just that he is CLOSE TO BEING REGARDED AS CLINICALLY OBESE - there is a big difference there. If he's an active lad, who eats all the right things and gets plenty of exercise, then surely there is no need to worry, even less so to moan to your local paper about it.

Exactly...

This story even made Twitter.

On a more positive note, there is obviously very little crime happening in Essex if this is a top story. That's a good thing surely.
