I am very disappointed to see Conservative Party literature for the local elections in Basildon misleading the public by suggesting the UK Independence Party “doesn’t have a policy”

on travellers.

Memories are very short among Basildon Tories. I went to Crays Hill to visit the Dale Farm site last year and publicly supported the line being taken by their council leader, Tony Ball.

While I was there, I visited local residents and was interviewed on television and radio where I strongly supported the action being taken by Basildon Council to clear the site.

I issued several press statements along the same lines and even offered to stand alongside Cllr Ball on the day the evictions were due to take place.

Mr Ball thanked me for my support. I also defended the council and police officers against accusations of racism from a Labour MEP.

The Conservative Party should withdraw these leaflets and publicly apologise.
