LISTEN to This launched earlier this year and has gathered an avid following – with the last in this series taking place next week.

The brainchild of music writer Daryl Easlea and academic Andrew Branch, the events have seen themes discussed by a panel of guest speakers, who have included Wilko Johnson, Will Birch and photographer Dean Chalkley.

Although this is the last in the series, they will return for a special event at Metal’s Village Green festival later in the year.

Next week’s event sees legendary Goldmine DJ Chris Hill join Hadleigh jazz funk man Mark Cotgrove – aka Snowboy – and professor of sociology Les Back for an evening called Everybody Dance: Music, Meaning And the Body, which is themed around Jackie Wilson playing at the Zero 6, in 1972, and Chris himself first taking to the decks at the Goldmine.

“The thing to say is just how successful the events have been,” says Daryl. “It’s exceeded our expectations and the lovely thing is that the audience have really got into it.”

Listen to This – Everybody Dance is at Metal, Chalkwell Hall, Chalkwell Park, on Thursday, May 17 at 7.30pm. Tickets are £5 – call 01702 470700.
