PAT Smith spent much of her life singing, and raising money to help other people to continue singing.

Now some of the best vocalists in south Essex are joining forces with dancers and comics to raise money in her memory.

Proceeds from tomorrow's special variety night at the Palace Theatre, Westcliff, will be donated to the Pat Smith Memorial Fund as a tribute to Pat, who died of cancer, two years ago. The line-up of singers includes many members of Rayleigh Operatic and Dramatic Society and the celebrated Leigh Orpheus Male Voice Choir.

Pat sang as soprano soloist for the Leigh Orpheus Choir for 30 years. She also played a vital role in keeping the choir’s finances on an even keel, so they could afford to keep making music.

Martin Wood, who was Pat’s partner, and is singing on Thursday night, says: “Pat spent years tirelessly raising money for the choir, often at times when they didn’t know where their next penny was coming from.”

Martin will sing alongside David Smith, Pat’s son, in a family tribute. Both are members of popular harmony group Bob’s Barbershop Boys.

Martin says: “We’ve previously raised £8,500 for Pat’s fund, which supports Southend Hospital’s oncology unit.

“The money allowed the unit to buy a bladder scanner, something not covered by the NHS budget. We’re told the scanner has already saved lives.”

Other acts line up for Thursday include Fred Schofield, performing as Al Jolson, Ed Lice and the Nits, the Contra Band, female vocal trio, Trilogy, and the Star Struck Dance Club, with Barry Wilson acting as compere.

Variety Night Palace Theatre, London Road, Westcliff Thursday May 24, 7.30pm. £12.
