Job Title: DEPUTY NEWS EDITOR
Department: EDITORIAL, BASILDON
Responsible to: Deputy Editor

Main Objectives:

• To  organise the newsgathering operation across all Echo editions, in conjunction with the News Editor (Echo) and Deputy Editor.
• To take a lead in forward planning for and sourcing news backgrounders, features, spreads and news specials for the Echo.
• In conjunction with the Deputy Editor, manage, develop and take responsibility for both Newsquest Essex daily paper websites, review their content and sections and ensure websites are updated regularly, working with reporters to ensure breaking news and pictures is uploaded as soon as possible.
• To take a lead on developing the daily papers’ use of social media including Twitter and Facebook, ensuring our titles reach new audiences

Key Responsibilities: The post holder will:

• Management: In conjunction with News Editor (Echo) manage editorial staff in Southend and Basildon.
• News Editing: Oversee news pages across Echo editions with particular focus on forward planning for news specials, backgrounders, spreads and news features.      
• Liaison: Play a leading part in daily and weekly editorial meetings. Will liaise by telephone with Southend-based staff and visit where appropriate.
• Planning: Will be expected to identify news opportunities and plan coverage
• Training: Will play an active role in training and staff development.
