A FOOTBALL fan has decided to avoid tiring marathons or gruelling treks to raise thousands of pounds for charity, and instead is sticking to something he knows.

David Oldbury, 38, a keen Southend United fan, is planning to fly to Argentina to watch 20 of the country's Primera Division football games in just 18 days.

During the trip, David, of Parkstone Drive, Southend, is aiming to raise £2,500 for Opportunity International, a charity which provides business and finance training in developing countries.

He said: "I like travelling and I love football so it all made sense.

"I was drawn to Argentina because the people there are so passionate about the game. I'm hoping to wear my Southend shirt at some of the matches, but I'll use my disgression on that.

"Some fans don't like to see other teams' colours at their grounds."

David will spend three months in the South American country and complete the challenge over six three-day weekends of football.

He is jetting off on Thursday, November 16 and will also see the national team play.

The software developer's trip will begin in the capital Buenos Aires, in the east of the country.

From there he will travel thousands of miles to take in all the games. He said: "I'm really excited, because I've been planning the trip for a year now. I'm confident I can get it all done, but there's still some work to do on the itinerary.

"It will cost a bit, but it's a lot cheaper than watching English Premiership games. I'm looking forward to sampling the atmosphere at the games and getting to know the locals."

So far, he has raised £1,125, and his employer, Lloyds TSB, has promised to match his the money he raises.
