FIVE people were arrested this morning in connection with the death of Lee Balkwell who has found dead trapped under a cement mixer ten years ago.

Officers from the Essex and Kent Police serious crime directorate arrested three men and two women at 5am.

Mr Balkwell, 33, was found dead between the drum and chasis of a cement mixer at Baldwin's Farm, Dennises Lane, South Ockendon, on July 18 2002.

An inquest in 2008 found he died as a result of gross negligence manslaughter, but no one was arrsted until now.

In January an Independent Police Complaints Commission report heavily criticised Essex Police's original investigation into the death.

Those arrested include a 43-year-old man from South Ockendon on suspicion of gross negligence manslaughter, perverting the course of justice and perjury.

Three people, also from South Ockendon, a 66-year-old man, 63-year-old woman and 49-year-old woman, and a 38-year-old man from Southend, were also arrested on suspicion of perverting the course of justice and perjury.

They remain in custody.
