A STONE carver made a Freeman of the City of London for his stonework in the capital has backed Southend’s bid to be crowned City of Culture.

Jim Davis, who now runs a stone carving group from his Shoebury studio, believes Southend deserves the title and the boost it will bring.

The 86-year-old sculptor, from Rembrandt Close, Shoebury, said: “Myself and all my students are behind it. If we got it, and we must stand half a chance because there is so much happening, it’s going to be a good thing for Southend.

“It’s going to help the arts and all kinds of industry.”

Southend is up against 10 other towns and cities from across the UK for the title of 2017 City of Culture, including Chester, Hull, Leicester and Aberdeen.
