THE second phase of work to transform a Canvey beauty spot is due to start next week.

Canvey Island Town Council in partnership with the Environment Agency will start work on Canvey Lake on November 18 – weather permitting.

The council plans to remove reeds from the area opposite the Denham Road bridge which it is hoped will improve water flow and make the area better for anglers.

Work will also include cutting back reeds, creating new water channels, defining the embankments, removing old signs and treating the area to stop the growth of pennywort.

The work is expected to last between six to eight weeks.

The council is warning residents the Denham Road car park will be shut while the work is carried out.

Contractors will be using it while they carry out the work and say they need to cordon it off for health and safety reasons.

Councillors say there should be little disruption to residents, but are writing to people living near by and parents at St Katherine’s Primary School and Winter Gardens Primary School, both in Hilton Road to warn them about the work.

The contractor will be on site from 8am each day with work starting at 8.30am.

They hope to finish each day by 6pm.

Councillor Doreen Anderson, chairman of town council, said: “This is an ongoing project to enhance the lake to make an area of beauty that people want to visit and enjoy.

“The council would welcome constructive comments as to what else residents would like to see introduced to the lake surroundings”
