SOUTHEND will be transformed into a winter wonderland this Christmas, with a number of festive events planned, starting with this weekend’s big light switch-on.

A bigger and better programme of events will take place this year and most of them are free.

Tomorrow (Saturday), the fun kicks off as the Southend Christmas Spectacular takes place with a range of events throughout the day.

A specially-constructed stage will be put up at Victoria Circus where entertainment will be provided by the likes of Funky Voices and Expressions Dance Group, before the switch-on is carried out by the Voice star, Leanne Jarvis.

The event event will also feature a Snow White-themed lunchtime parade, including live reindeers pulling Santa on his sleigh, as well as samba and jazz bands and masked characters.

From 5.30pm, there will be a firework spectacular on the seafront.

The programme of events has been organised by Southend Bid – a not-for-profit group representing 371 of the town’s businesses.

Chairman Dawn Jeakings, who is also manager of the Royals shopping centre, said: “We have helped put together a packed programme of magical events that people know and love, plus some new and exciting ones – and they all perfectly showcase what fantastic things our town centre has to offer shoppers, traders, residents and visitors alike.

“We want to ensure Southend remains the destination of choice for Christmas shopping by investing in offering some of the best, free events in Essex.”
