THE grandson of 84-year-old John Anker has been remanded in custody after appearing in court charged with his murder.

Anthony Winter, 34, of Westborough Road, Westcliff, is charged with one count of murder and a separate count of attempted murder in connection with a knife attack in Southend.

Yesterday, post mortem results revealed Mr Anker had died from a single stab wound.

His wife, 81-year-old Pamela Anker, was wounded in the attack and remains in a stable condition in hospital.

The attack took place at Stephen McAdden House in Burr Hill Chase, Southend at around 2pm on Thursday.

Winter, who is self-employed, appeared in front of Chelmsford Magistrates earlier today.

He was remanded until Tuesday, November 19, for a plea hearing at Chelmsford Crown Court.

Police say that they are still working with the family of the victims to support them at this difficult time.
