Man, 85, loses £500 to pickpocket

First published in Local News by

A MAN in his 80s had £500 in cash stolen by pickpockets.

The 85-year-old was walking along Lifstan Way, Southchurch, and had reached the junction with Woodgrange Drive when he was approached by a man with a map who asked him for help with directions.

The victim was aware of the man getting very close to him whilst he asked for help but it was only after he had continued on his way that he realised his wallet had been taken.

The suspect is described as white, about 24 years old and more than 5ft 6in tall.

Anyone who believes they may have witnessed the incident or who has any other information that could assist the police is asked to contact PC Warren Lamb at Shoebury Police Station on 101 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.

What on EARTH was the man carrying £500 on his person for?

For a start, I wouldn't have it to carry and for another, I would never carry more than £20 cash outside. There are too many scumbags. God knows, the country is run by them, the police are too interested in chasing innocent people and these cockroaches just get away with it.

I really REALLY don't understand older people who carry large sums of cash around and keep it indoors too.

Surely they must be aware this country is no longer the same as the one they grew up in.

It's a cesspit.

You contradict yourself quite a bit Kimberley. In the other story you say its okay to take £1500 worth of stuff into a changing room, but then you think its unacceptable to carry around more then £20 in cash. Make your mind up. Maybe he just got it out the bank and needed it for a deposit for something. Or maybe this old boy was a drug dealer.

first bit is correct, but "without fear of being robbed" is just a pipe dream these days.....

Only reason she gets annoyed is because she dare not step out of line in life and has to pay for everything. I have told her to do a few shoplifts to save the pounds. But she won't listen. Gandy how about we meet up in Rayleigh town centre for tea and cake, then I'll take you on a shoplifting spree and I'll show you how it's done. Don't worry, all profit made will halved.

Silly yo carry that amount of money and in a wallet that could be pick pocketed. I stopped carrying a purse for that reason, I spread my cash on my person so any thief will be very disaappointed with anything he digs out of my pocket!

My lovely RunW I think 'we' all get that... but you do realise that there are still some companies that require CASH.... I would in this instance ask the guy "Did anyone want a cash payment off you?"

and go from there.
