500 say no to new KFC drive-through

Protesters – John Scarola, Bob Taylor and Samantha Marsh with their petition

Protesters – John Scarola, Bob Taylor and Samantha Marsh with their petition

First published in Local News by

MORE than 500 residents have now backed the fight to stop a KFC drive-through opening in Laindon.

Campaigners against the controversial proposals to build the fast food restaurant on the former Laindon Hotel site, in High Road, handed in the petition to Basildon Council.

Developers Laindon Holdings first submitted plans for a 24- hour takeaway at the beginning of 2012, but it was turned down by Basildon Council over concerns about traffic, noise and litter.

Proposals, with revised opening times, resurfaced months later and after they too were rejected the firm lodged an appeal.

Planning inspector Isobel McCretton upheld the council’s decision in May on the grounds the design and appearance of the restaurant was not suitable for the residential area.

But the developers aren’t going away.

So Bob Taylor, 66, of Bedford Road, began door-knocking neighbours and handing out leaflets to gather support as soon as Laindon Holdings submitted its latest application earlier this month.

He said: “The support has been incredible, to get 500 signatures is amazing. It has brought out the community spirit in everyone.

“We just hope it puts some weight behind our fight. We have had a lot of practice with petitions now because this has been going on so long.

“Lots of people have thanked me for putting in all the legwork.

Everyone I have spoken to is against the drive-through, but because they work, it is difficult for them to actively do anything about it.”

The campaigners are now planning to start a second petition online to reach even more residents.

John Scarola, Labour councillor for Laindon Park, added: “There are no KFCs in this country in a residential area like this, they are all in retail parks or shopping centres.

“There is no reason why they should be building it there.

“If this goes ahead it will be a nightmare. There will be chaos with the smells, the noise, boy racers, rats. It will be a disaster for the area.

“Everyone is against it. They are appalled it has come up again. The residents would be happy to have a new health centre there or even houses instead.”

If the KFC plans are given the go-ahead, Essex franchise Kefco Sales will operate the restaurant and takeaway.

They have been in consultation with Laindon Holdings throughout the two year application process, and insist the latest plans should ease concerns.

A spokeswoman said: “KFC can be a positive addition to any community, and we always try to be a good neighbour.

“We’ve responded to issues raised in Basildon and our amended application includes a different style of building and state of the art systems to eliminate any cooking odours.

“We are delighted to be part of the Essex-wide litter prevention campaign the Cleaner Essex Group working in partnership with other businesses and Essex County Council.

“We are also happy to work closelywith Basildon residents to ensure any other issues are addressed."

Well, it's a different company. The franchisee might not see an opportunity in the town centre.

I don't really see what the issue is. I'd be more than happy to have a KFC on that site. I can't see any valid argument against it. I don't buy into this 'New Town' zoning attitude. Residential and commercial can coexist in the same location. It's more convenient for everybody. How many people haven't signed the petition?

Yet in other parts of the borough, where this happens on a regular basis, thanks to a small minority of people, the locals there have to put up and shut up, or be labelled with an "ism". We mustn't infringe on others' freedoms to behave appallingly must we?

Funny how Labour can find this behaviour offensive when it is their 13 years in office that created a yob culture in this country on an unprecedented scale.

Because of course, such elements have "human rights" and under Labour were mollycoddled - and a whole generation was told they could have "freedom of expression" without consequences - and rights without responsibilities..

Let's just remind them it is their administration that created the yob society we have now, particularly with regard to youth elements. They only have themselves to blame.

And by far the worst behaviour in any council meeting comes from the Labour group, who chomp, text, Tweet and yap their way through meetings, not to mention wasting public money and police time, engaging themselves in hate campaigns against opponents, instead of just sticking to attacking people politically, they get personal.

So if we are going to appoint ourselves as moral guardians, let's first of all look at our own behaviour.

That aside, people are perfectly capable of campaigning against something without Labour hijacking it all the time, to score political brownie points.

Sounds like an ideal location for a drive through. Convenient for drivers but still local enough to be of value to those who don't have, or don't want to use a car - unlike retail parks. Jobs for local people and good use of the site. Everybody wins.

I did not sign the petition.
There is a police station next door to the site so i'm sure the boy racers will stick to skidding around the old gin factory site.
Fast food companies have to comply with regulations to ensure the site and area are rubbish free. I have never seen mounds of rubbish or rats at the McDonalds at the FoW or the KFC at Mayflower. It is bad enough the Laindon Centre is becoming more of an eyesore every year because locals keep complaining. If the area is to regenerate then people need to allow businesses to open to encourage other investors into the area.
