INDEPENDENT councillor Ron Woodley is to become leader of Southend Council.

The Tories will be officially kicked out of power on Thursday and replaced with a joint Independent, Labour and Lib Dem administration.

Members will be asked during a full council meeting at the Civic Centre to ratify the new leadership group.

Mr Woodley said it was an exciting time for the authority, parties and residents of the borough.

"I am very pleased that we have all been able to unite for the common purpose of serving the local people of Southend," the Thorpe ward councillor said.

It amuses me that party die-hards always assume the other parties will be incompetent, and that their chosen gang knows what's what. They all seem pretty pants to me.

was thinking the same thing....how are they independent if there is more than one of them and they are a group? essentially they are all individuals with different views, opinions and thoughts on voting....So really the council is now being run by 13 individuals, labour and liberals. Good luck trying to agree on anything there then! Cant help but think UKIP should have been involved. That is the party that made the most gains in southend and therefore represented who most people in southend wanted running the council.

If you understood politics you would undrstand that they are independent of any party whip. They are able to express individual thoughts and ideas and are able to represent the electotate first without having to abide by party policy. Independents may join together as a "group" so that they may discuss and debate issues and come to agreements amongst themselves. However, essentially, they are free to stand on their own individual beliefs and act "independently" on the wishes of their electorate without fear of reprisal had they been affiliated to a particular party and not adhered to that party's agenda.
Hope that clears it up.

But you do need to ask....is this the best council for Southend? I don't think so. We have 13 independent councillors who can and will all vote and do whatever they believe is right, irrespective of what the others do. Labour and Lib Dems who will also do this, whilst being held to account by their party whips. How will anything get decided upon unless the independents essentially abide by their own un-written whip? They are the same as any other party then - with the exception of UKIP who are one political party, one group but have NO party whip. That is one reason why I think many people voted UKIP this year. Now the council will run by an independent group who will have to create their own whip or agree with either the liberal or labour whip in order to 'win' major votes. Its a bit of a no win situation for Southenders I think.

The point is that this is pretty much the only coalition possible to run the council. While the Independents would happily work with UKIP, with whom they had an electoral pact at the local elections, Labour and Liberal won't. A coalition between UKIP and Conservatives is short of a majority. The Conservatives are licking their wounds, and given recent Southend politics there is no question of the Independents working with them.

It's not going to be easy to get sensible or coherent politics though out of this coalition. At least the Conservatives mostly agreed with each other. Expect a shambles for the coming year.

council tax should rise by 8% for bands D and above. The reason why labour, lib-dem and independent areas turned to slums is because the 'then' ruling Tory party in southend where only interested in looking after their own.

In my Area UKIP won by a huge margin. we had Blair who sold the lives of our young lads to a fake war, Brown who printed money and sold off our gold reserves, Cameron that killed our NHS, so definitely a need for a new party ... and lib dems, don't make me laugh!
If you cared about the NHS, you should read UKIP's policies and realise that they're worse than the Conservatives for pushing the privatisation agenda.

It's not labour. It's a coalition. labour are a minority partner. Should be good though, a bit of a democracy in southend for once as opposed to the Tories running southend in their own self interest. Thank god the UKIP and Tory wolf is kept form the door.
HC does need a few things explaining. She shouts and bawls a lot at those who know better but rarely offers an opinion based on knowledge.

Funny thing is she opposes me - and I oppose Labour myself. Work that one out.

Trouble with Southend UKIP is that James Moyies is vehemently anti English so expect to see St George's Day banned. He is a Scottish nationalist who considers anyone pro English a racist.

Especially if they're female. Absolutely loathes females in politics like some of the other UKIP characters in the Southend/Rochford area, including Hayter and Lee.

Put the three together and you have Act 1 Scene 1 Macbeth.

Surprisingly enough for you, your comment does nothing but epitomise yourself. Looking at your references online, you seem so far to the right, and so wrapped up were you in the EDL, that Labour must seem to you on par with Madame Guillotine, who ably assisted the common hard-working people of France to show the self-styled "Elite" the error of their ways. That solution did so frighten our "Elite" that they immediately conned the people into a terrible war with France, for fear that our common people would inflict their right to a decent life here. Being as there seems to be not one post on here where you do not decry Labour, are you beginning to fear for your life too?
Oh and whilst we are at it, the other day you told me how you used the hoist in a care home. At your young age you probably do not realise that the hoist you used came only because "Health and Safety" (the other target of your pure hatred campaign) brought about the use of that investment. Without health and safety you would have been lifting that person without the hoist, possibly managing on your own! Empty vessels?

Nice to see a shake-up of the council - the Tories were getting very conceited after being in charge for so long. However most so-called 'independents' are failed Labour candidates & along with the Liberals we have pretty much got a Labour council in all but name. Unfortunately Labour areas usually degrade into slums & no doubt Council Tax will go up which I hope will be avoided.
council tax should rise by 8% for bands D and above. The reason why labour, lib-dem and independent areas turned to slums is because the 'then' ruling Tory party in southend where only interested in looking after their own.
Council tax bands are linked by a formula, so they all go up or down by the same percentage.
Start charging day trippers for their visits to the seaside with higher parking charges along the seafront, discounted for residents, and fines for leaving litter on the beach.

can we not instead just raise tax on cigarettes and institute a tax on sky tv subscriptions?
