TED Roberts's children were faced with a significant problem - what to do with the boat that represented the culmination of their father's lifelong dream.

Mr Roberts, who lived in Leigh but grew up in Benfleet, had always wanted to own his own boat. When he came across the Nimbus two years ago, he knew it was meant to be his.

Not only was it a historic vessel that was used to transport pilots to boats, it was also built in 1936 - the same year he was born.

But Mr Roberts died a few weeks ago, aged 71. His children, Wendy, Paul, John and Sarah, are now keen for the unique 30ft vessel to be sold to someone who cares as much about boats as their father did.

Wendy Roberts said: "He loved the sea and always dreamed of having his own boat. He realised that dream in the last two years of his life.

"The Nimbus was the first boat he ever had. He took it out on the water and really enjoyed it.

"He was very much a man who loved nature. He would get up at 4am and go out to Two Tree Island."

She said she was sure someone would be interested in the Nimbus and would get as much enjoyment out of it as her dad.

Miss Roberts, of Seaview Road, Leigh, said: "We would love if it could go to somebody who really appreciated the boat for what it is. It is a classic boat and very unusual. It should go to someone who would really give it some TLC."

Ted Roberts, a grandfather-of-four and a great-grandfather-of-two, was a builder all his life. He was also an enthusiastic singer, although he never performed in public.

Miss Roberts said: "When he sang, it was like Frank Sinatra was in the room.

"If he went on X Factor, he would have wiped the floor with the other contestants. He had a pitch perfect voice and most probably enjoyed singing on his boat as well."
