A CONVENIENCE store in Hawkwell is set to close for almost two weeks from Saturday for refurbishment.

The decision to shut the Cooperative food store, in Main Road, has upset residents, as it is the only local supermarket.

Margret Cox, 76, of Victor Gardens, Hawkwell, said many people will now struggle to do their shopping. She added: “It is OK if they have relatives to shop for them, but if not, it’shard.

“It is more effort for me. I have bad knees at the moment and will have to go all the way to Southend on the bus to get my shopping.” Helen Grigg- MacEwan, who also lives in Hawkwell, agreed the closure would affect older customers.

She said: “The nearest place will be down in Hockley.”

Shirley Mayes, whose elderly parents live in Hawkwell, said her father used the store daily to get his paper and now he would not be able to do that.

She added: “It will affect lots of elderly people. The buses are atrocious at the moment so it will be hard for them.”

The store will be closed until Thursday, August 27. The Co-op was unavailable for comment
