THE Countess of Wessex has performed her last role as a charity's patron in Southend.
Sophie Wessex was on hand for the official opening of the John Grooms Home in Kenway Court and inspect the new building.
It was her last appearance for the charity, as John Grooms is to merge with the Shaftesbury Society to make the largest charity for disabled people in the country.
The current president of the Shaftesbury Society, Princess Anne, will head the newly formed organisation.
Geoff Salmon, Southend appeals director for John Grooms, said: "She was impressed with the quality of the building and the facilities available for giving independence.
"She met all the residents and told us how much she had enjoyed watching the progress of the house over time."
