GOVERNMENT proposals for an independent commission to decide major planning schemes are set to be opposed by Essex County Council.

The new commission would take over decisions on applications such as extensions at Stansted Airport or a new nuclear power station at Bradwell.

Members of the planning policy development group will be discussing the implications at a meeting tomorrow.

A report by David Dash, spatial planning manager, said the council should oppose the idea.

He described the evidence for the commission as unconvincing.

He added: "Far from enhancing community engagement, it places power in the hands of an appointed quango.

"There is no justification as to why major proposals should be singled out for such a unique approach."
