NEW social housing projects have been given the go-ahead by councillors.
Members of Southend Council's development control committee agreed plans for eight, low-cost homes in Alton Gardens, Southend, and 11 homes in Derek Gardens, also in the town.
The projects, by Swan Housing, involve knocking down garages to make way for the developments.
Ron Price, Tory chairman of the committee, said: "It gives us an opportunity to have affordable housing where it's desperately needed."
All the homes will be affordable housing, to help people who can't afford to buy or rent a house. Gwen Horrigan, (Con, West Leigh) said: "This applicant has developed homes across the region that are a pleasure for residents to live in. They are well managed and that goes a long way for local residents with concerns.
"We have an opportunity to clear this site, which has caused problems for residents."
