YOUNG offenders have been repaying their debt to society by carrying out unpaid work.

The eight offenders helped remove graffiti and repaint a walkway around Crown House, in Crown Road, Grays.

Thurrock Council has been working with the probation service on a number of similar projects where young offenders have been removing graffiti and litter from Thurrock parks and open spaces.

For this clean-up project, the youths spent the whole day tackling graffiti on the walkway.

Councillor Ben Maney, cabinet portfolio holder for community protection, said: "This initiative is a step in the right direction to ensuring Thurrock is cleaner and safer.

"People not only see the benefit from the work these young offenders do, they also see them doing it.

"This means the work serves both as a deterrent for them to not commit future offence and to other young people who may think they will get away with vandalising public places."
