THE Labour Party's new parliamentary spokesman for Castle Point has criticised the state of Canvey seafront.

Julian Ware-Lane, 47, said he was "aghast" at the weeds and graffiti during a visit, and he accused councillors of neglecting a prime area for business and tourism.

He said: "Good money has been spent and thrown away there. I urge Castle Point Council to do what it takes to make this an area of pride again. This should be a jewel, not an eyesore. Regular police visits, as well as investment in youth facilities, must be a priority."

Mr Ware-Lane lives in Leigh with his wife and six children.

Long-awaited plans to overhaul the seafront have been drawn up by Castle Point Regeneration Partnership following a £1million Thames Gateway grant.

The bulk of work is due to get under way this autumn, and be completed next year.

New footpaths, lighting and bins will be installed, while the seafront's pot-holed car parks are in line for a revamp.
