WORKERS at a West Thurrock factory fear their jobs could be axed to improve efficiency and profits.

An employee of Proctor and Gamble, who has asked not to be named, claimed bosses from the firm, based in Hedley Road, were planning to wash their hands of 25 workers.

He said: "Proctor and Gamble are out sourcing their jobs to other companies. Some have given 15 to 20 years service. They are being sold down the river with no pension or pay off. What a way to treat loyal employees."

Proctor and Gamble make household products, including Aerial washing powder and Crest toothpaste. The plant, which was built in 1937, employs 450 people.

A company spokeswoman confirmed the firm was carrying out an efficiency improvement study.

She said: "Like all businesses we are careful to make sure that we are running our affairs as efficiently as possible to maintain their long term profitability.

"This study is still on-going."
