FIRE-ravaged Orsett Hall has taken its first step back to its former glory with the completion of a new suite, set to open in November.

Thurrock mayor, councillor Dianne Revell and her husband councillor Mike Revell paid a visit to the site on Tuesday, to see its progress following the fire in May.

The 17th century hall was reduced to rubble by the blaze, which began in the kitchen area of the 21-bedroom venue.

Mrs Revell said: "It was heartbreaking to see Orsett Hall destroyed. It was not only one of the most outstanding buildings in Thurrock, but in the whole of the south of England.

"It was a great loss to the borough and I hope the new building will match the style and standard of the old one. I am honoured to be here to launch the start of what I hope will be a new beginning for the hall and I also look forward to attending events in the new pavilion once it is open."

Hall owners, Steve and Lynn Haynes are now looking forward to the completion of the new building once planning permission is granted.

Meanwhile the first stage of building work on the Grahame Thomas Pavilion - named after a prominent Thurrock businessman - has been completed.

The second stage of the project started this month, with completion expected by the beginning of November when the pavilion suite will host its first function.
