MOTORISTS have been doing a double take after spotting some dubious spelling on this Essex County Council road sign.
The sign - warning of roadworks at the junction of Eastwood Road and the High Street in Rayleigh, warns of "Roadworks ahaed".
Council chiefs are now sorting out the problem.
When the Echo told him about the slip, county councillor Norman Hume, who is responsible for highways, admitted: "We were already aware of this unfortunate spelling error.
"The spelling on the specification was correct, so the error occurred during manufacturing.
"Although the mistake was unfortunate, the message was still clear, so there were no safety implications."
But he went on to promise: "The lettering will be altered."
