A NEW campaign to help the homeless and underprivileged is being launched in Leigh next month.

During September, the Salvation Army will be on doors to collect vital funds for the army's social and community work.

The Salvation Army says 92p of every pound given to its annual appeal goes directly to help people in need.

Major John Carmichael, appeals co-ordinator for Leigh, urged residents to look out for Salvation Army collectors, their blue Belief in Action collection envelopes and collecting tins.

He also wants to hear from anyone who can deliver and collect the envelopes.

The Leigh branch runs an elderly people's day care community programme, pre and after school clubs, a lunch club for the elderly, a Sunday school and Christian clubs for children. It also runs a charity shop, advice centre and support groups.

Collectors, whether or not they are in uniform, will be carrying collectors' badges and permits which can be checked before donating.

You can also support the appeal by calling the Salvation Army centre, on 01702 716607, or going to www.salvationarmy.org.uk/annualappeal
