A POPULAR charity broadcasting round-the-clock radio shows into elderly people's homes is launching a £40,000 campaign to rebuild its crumbling studios.

Volunteers at Link Radio in Hadleigh hope thousands can be raised to help construct a brand new building at its site in Beresford Close.

John Brennan, 68, Link Radio Trust chairman, said: "The place has wood rot and is beyond a state of repair. Sadly the whole thing has got to be knocked down and rebuilt."

Mr Brennan helped found the charity on Canvey in 1984 to help older residents keep in touch with the community from the comfort of their armchairs.

He said: "I thought there was a gap in the market. Radio was growing and there was plenty for younger people, but nothing for older residents. There was a real need for something new and that's how Link Radio came about."

It moved from Little Gypps Road to its current base, nicknamed the Readispace Cabin, ten years ago.

Over that time the number of care homes and elderly people's schemes which listen to the station has mushroomed from two to 29, spanning Rochford, Castle Point, Rayleigh and Billericay.

He said: "People who hear us refer to us as their lifeline. We provide a service 24/7, 365 days a year. We're there all the time when people feel lonely, can't sleep or are in pain. People can just switch on their TVs and listen to us. It gives them a great deal of comfort."

If enough funding can be found, the charity hopes to begin building the newly equipped studios in January next year and then hopefully expand their service into Basildon.

The charity broadcasts a range of music, community stories and its ever popular show Getting to Know You, where local people talk about their jobs and favourite tunes.

Mr Brennan said: "We've always raised our own money, but this time because it's a big project we need help."

Link Radio will be holding a buffet and disco fundraising evening at the Tandoori Parlour, Hart Road, Thundersley, on Wednesday, September 5. Tickets cost £10.
