TRAVELLERS moved on to Shoebury East Beach at the weekend after a barrier was left up. Southend Council issued an order informing the travellers they must move on by today, after they arrived at the site on Friday. Mike Assenheim, independent councillor for Shoebury, said he had received several calls from residents and had been to speak to the police and the council, as the gates should be locked at night. He said: "It's this top barrier that's supposed to be closed at all times to stop these caravans coming in. That's what they were put there for in the first place. "East Beach should be locked at night, not only to stop this, but the boy racers as well." The travellers had earlier been in the car park of the Homebase store in Rayleigh Weir, but had moved on by 3pm. A spokeswoman for Homebase said: "There was a slight disturbance, but they moved on, so there wasn't a problem at all."
