THE victim of a vicious carjacking has spoken of his terrifying ordeal at the hands of two thugs.

The victim, who asked not to be named, was standing next to his car when he was confronted by the robbers near Leigh railway station and forced to hand over his keys. His car was parked in a unmade road near the station car park, close to the skatepark.

The 21-year-old was threatened with a large wrench while a friend had a butcher’s knife held to his throat.

The two robbers demanded the terrified victim hand over his car keys then ordered his pal to give up his wallet and mobile phone before fleeing with the car.

The victim, a university student who lives in Westcliff, said: “We were putting stuff in the boot of the car when they came at us from behind and made their demands.

“At first I said no. So he thrust a wrench at me and said: ‘It’s your car or your life.’ The other man had a butcher’s knife to my friend’s throat.”

The thieves took the goods and drove away in the L-reg blue Peugeot 106, which also contained a valuable camera with lenses and a skateboard.

The victim said: “We want to warn people about what happened. A lot of people park in that area because it’s free.

“Each day there are at least 50 cars parked in non-designated spaces along that road.

“Many belong to young women who would be much more vulnerable than myself. It is a quiet, unlit place that is not covered by any CCTV, and there is no doubt in my mind the two men will strike again.”

The car owner and his friend were left shaken by what happened, but were unhurt.

Police are still appealing for any witnesses to the crime to come forward.

Both culprits were white men, aged 20 to 24, who wore dark clothing and hats.

One was 6ft tall, slim with an athletic build, while his accomplice was 5ft 10ins tall and stocky. Witnesses to the robbery, at 7pm on Friday, should call Leigh police on 0300 3334444 or Crimestoppers on 0800 5551111.
