FIREFIGHTERS battled to put out 15ft flames after a garage and the vehicle inside it caught fire.

A man in his early 20s, who was the owner of the car in the garage, was taken to hospital in an ambulance suffering from superficial burns.

Three appliances, two from Canvey and one from Hadleigh, were sent to the blaze in Second Avenue, Canvey at 1.20am after receiving multiple calls from distressed neighbours.

It took four firefighters wearing breathing apparatus 30 minutes to put out the fire using two hose reel jets.

Russ Freeman, the officer in charge of Canvey Blue watch, said: “When we arrived the fire was significant and there were large ammounts of heat and smoke.

“The garage was completely destroyed and so was the vehicle inside it.”

Officer Freeman said firefighters managed to stop the fire from spreading to the garages on either side.

He added: “We are still investigating the exact cause of the fire but we believe it to have been accidental.”

He said the police were not involved.
