CHILDREN have been doing their bit to improve road safety near to where they live.

Youngsters from the Nevendon After-School Activities Club, who live in the Moat Housing estate, in Cricketers Way, Nevendon, have spent the last month doing a traffic survey.

They have been tracking the comings and goings of cars using the busy road to get to homes and the Sainsbury’s store, as well as making notes of any traffic problems.

The children have also been coming up with ideas of how to slow traffic, such as improving signs and introducing traffic calming measures.

Teams of youngsters, joined by Essex County Council’s road safety officer Linda Shrimpton and Moat Housing staff, spent several sessions on the roadside logging traffic movements.

They met up last week to discuss their findings and all of the children were presented with a reflective bag to make them visible to motorists.

Grace Shepherd, seven, who lives in Nevendon and was one of those who took part, said: “We really liked counting the cars and lorries and filling in the books as there is lots of traffic where we live.”

Nicola Syder, community development officer at Moat, added: “We are very grateful to Linda and her team for helping us to carry out the survey.

“The children were very enthusiastic and enjoyed the project. We are now going to use this information to help to improve road safety.”
