OPERA might not have the appeal of the X Factor for most youngsters, but a young singer from Thorpe Bay is heading to London after landing a role at the Royal Albert Hall.

Haydn Cox, 13, of Thorpe Hall Avenue, has won a role in Carmen, which will open in February next year.

The Eastwood High School pupil has already performed at the venue in a production of Tosca, and will be singing the junior lead soprano part in the tale of a beautiful gipsy, murdered by her former lover.

His father Gary said: “Haydn is really excited about his role, and is really pleased to be back at the Royal Albert Hall. As a family we are very proud of him.”

As he begins rehearsals for the opera, the youngster is also treading the boards in Southend, playing the role of Puck in the Southend Shakespeare Company’s production of A Midsummer Night’s Dream at the Palace Theatre, in Westcliff.

Haydn first began performing after winning a scholarship through the Echo’s We Wanna Make You A Star Competition in 2003.
