SNOW falling across the country brought roads and rail lines to a standstill in south Essex.
The snowfall is the heaviest in the south east of England for 18 years, affecting thousands of motorists and rail passengers and forcing hundreds of schools to close.
Up to six inches of snow fell in parts of the south east.
