YOBS attacked a medieval museum just after it received a £15,000 makeover.
Southchurch Hall Museum had cladding tiles ripped from the building in the attack.
Vandals caused £200 damage to the 14th century listed building by tearing the tiles down from the outside wall.
The cost of repair will have to be picked up by the taxpayer as the building is not insured against acts of vandalism.
Museum manager John Skinner said: “It’s very sad. It’s a waste of public money and very disappointing.”
Every year the building is the venue for a Tudor event where about 2,000 people learn what it was like to live during the period.
