YOUNGSTERS at a Basildon primary school have been getting physical and learning about healthy living.

Pupils at Lee Chapel Primary School have been finding out about all sorts of ways to keep fit and healthy as part of their annual science week programme.

During one event, Year 6 pupils pedalled furiously on cycle machines and saw their hard work pay off when the energy was used to power small electrical items.

This exercise was arranged by London-based environmental campaigners, the Magnificent Revolution Company, who turned up as part of a scheme to help encourage pupils to cycle to school. Throughout the rest of the week, youngsters also took part in a giant aerobics class in the playground, tried Irish dancing, practised their football skills, and were given a talk by the school nurse on health and hygiene.

Hazel Vanderputt, head of science, said: “This year we have focused on the theme of healthy living and the children have been studying how exercise and a balanced diet can support a healthy lifestyle.

“They found the aerobics enormously invigorating and they’ve enjoyed all the activities and experiments.”
