RESIDENTS on Shoebury’s new Garrison estate have started a petition to have a coastal path near their homes diverted to protect their privacy.

They organised the petition with traders in Shoebury High Street, and presented it to ward councillor Mike Assenheim.

The residents are demanding the existing path be diverted so it doesn’t interrupt their sea views.

They claim diverting the path through the main estate will let them enjoy the “privacy of their own gardens”.

Petition organiser Matthew Brittain said: “All the residents and traders are asking Southend Council for is fair play and common sense to prevail – and for the council to accept the signed petition for diverting the coastal and cycle path.”

The petition, which was signed by 49 people, also claims the coastal path is too narrow, and that cyclists and walkers would be safer using the estate’s roads.

The petition also says this will help High Street traders, as more walkers will go past the shops.

Mr Assenheim has confirmed the petition is now with the council.

However, councillor Anna Waite, responsible for transport and planning, has indicated the demand is unlikely to be granted.

She said: “How can you have a coastal path which goes behind seafront houses?

“For many years, it has been made very clear exactly where the path will go, and it’s extremely unlikely their demand will be granted.”
