A GARDEN designed and planted by pupils to be used by children with special needs has been officially opened.
About 22 keen gardeners from Years 10 and 11 from Chalvedon and Barstable schools, in Pitsea, were involved in the project.
They hope it will be enjoyed by youngsters who use the Share Centre, in The Fryth, Basildon, as an after-school and holiday club.
The garden has its own vegetable patch and a sensory area.
Chalvedon School vice-principal Simon Gosden officially opened the garden and presented the gardeners with a trophy in recognition of all their hard work.
The pupils raised the money for garden furniture and plants.
Lena Piper, a learning manager at Chalvedon who ran the project, said: “They have put in a lot of hard work. The garden has turned out really well.
“It was piles of mud before. They’ve done practically everything from scratch.”
