BASILDON synth-pop legends Depeche Mode cancelled an Athens concert after lead singer David Gahan fell ill and was taken to hospital.
With 20,000 Greek fans waiting for the electronic outfit to take the stage, embarrassed organisers announced the concert was cancelled.
A concert organiser announced: “We regret today’s performance has to be cancelled. David Gahan fell ill in his dressing room.”
Gahan has been lead vocalist since the band’s start-up in Basildon, in 1980.
In 1996, he was lucky to survive when his heart stopped for two minutes following a drug overdose in a hotel room in Los Angeles.
Depeche Mode are one of the longest-lived bands to have emerged from the early Eighties, with 45 songs in the British singles chart.
The band plays post-punk, new wave music and has sold more than 75 million albums worldwide.
