THE chairman of a football league has defended its reputation following a brawl at a youth cup final.

Shocked spectators reported seeing a fight break out among players and watching adults at the final of the Southend and District U15s Cup on Sunday afternoon.

Trouble reportedly started at the end of the game, in which Deaneswood Youth beat Southend Manor Youth 2-0 at Southend United’s ground, Roots Hall.

Peter Harris, chairman of Southend and District Junior Sunday Football League, said: “We have been extremely fortunate to stage our finals at such a prestigious venue as Roots Hall.

“We have only had one final out of over 200 that has caused any issues and that was dealt with promptly and efficiently by the stewards and league officials.

“The individuals and clubs involved will be dealt with by the appropriate authorities.

“We would invite the tiny minority to look at themselves and ask if their behaviour is appropriate, especially within youth football.

“We hope with all sincerity this incident does not mar our reputation or relationship with Southend United.”

Meanwhile, the assistant manager of Southend Manor, Tom Sloan, has insisted that he did not call the police following the incident about 4.50pm on Sunday.

He said: “It was the official steward who asked one of our players whether he wanted the police to be called and he said ‘yes’.

“It was the steward who called the police.”

Dave Scriven, Southend United spokesman, added: “We enjoy hosting these finals because it’s great the youngsters get to play at Roots Hall.

“This is the first incident of trouble the club has had in 30 years of hosting the competition.”
