A SOUTHEND charity has stepped in to help fund a trip for war veterans to commemorate D-Day.

When the Round Table read of the appeal for help with travel costs in the Echo, it moved quickly to get in touch and offer to help.

Southend Priory Round Table donated £500 for 21 veterans of the D-Day landings to visit the site to mark the event which sparked the end of the Second World War.

A group of members from Southend Priory Round Table, led by chairman Andrew Rourke, presented a cheque to representatives of the Southend branch of the Normandy Veterans’ Association, including president Ernie Dark and chairman Don Sheppard.

The group of veterans will leave for Normandy on June 3 for a five-day trip to mark the 65th anniversary.

They will join around 800 pensioners from across the country for the ceremonies.
